For those of you who enjoyed the previous post on books as sculptural works of art, feast your eyes on the work of Brian Dettmer who alters books, etching them into complex topographies.
There are obvious formal differences between the works of Brian Dettmer and Isaac Salazar, but it's still fascinating to witness just what a book can be.

I like this type of work but would have thought of it as a relief carving rather than a book. I always liked the way relief carving creates a 3D image in what at first glance the brain assumes should be a 2D plane. An impressive amount of 3D thinking required I think!

I'd never thought about it like that, but I can see what you mean by comparing it to relief carving: It's as much about what Dettmer takes away as it is about what he leaves for us to see...
